2. Specific memories remain, but with fewer details

When switching, older adults' ability to recall specific events (like birthdays) didn't drop much. However, their recollections became 'drier': fewer vivid details like sights, sounds, and emotions, and more generalized knowledge instead.

The researchers say this reflects changes in the brain's underlying systems: the circuits responsible for retrieving detailed context age, but those for summarizing remain.

3. Worse memory? Maybe it's wiser

Don't be quick to sigh. The researchers note that generalized memories can support wisdom, pattern recognition, and efficient communication—even if fine details are lost.
