More roads, more fires

The administration says roads help fight wildfires, but data shows roads bring people, and people start fires. Nearly 80% of human-caused fires begin within half a mile of a road. The Forest Service's own draft acknowledges lower fire frequency in roadless areas.

Legal precedent is strong

In 2001, the timber industry sued to stop the rule, but courts upheld it, setting a precedent for environmental groups to 'speak for the trees.' Now, any reversal must overcome that precedent and overwhelming public opposition, with 99% of comments against the change.

Fatal flaws in the plan

The 30-day comment period on a 240-page document is too short, with no public meetings. The administration also ignored alternative plans and failed to analyze impacts on endangered species and water supplies. Lack of tribal consultation will likely trigger more lawsuits.
