The Age of the Third Brain

Back in 1945, Vannevar Bush predicted the modern information crisis: knowledge was growing faster than any single brain could handle. He dreamed of a desk-sized device called the memex that could store all your books and records and let you jump between them by association.

The memex was never built, but the idea kept resurfacing. By the smartphone era it found a name that stuck: the 'second brain' — an external system where you capture ideas and retrieve them when needed.

The brain forgets, and notes don't save you

The brain is great at reading social cues, spotting patterns and making creative leaps, but its working memory holds only about four to seven chunks at once, and long-term memory stores what surprised, scared or repeated — not what you deliberately catalogued.

So serious intellectual work has always needed a scaffold. Aristotle described memory as impressions stamped into wax, and the 1998 'extended mind' paper argued that an Alzheimer's patient navigating with a notebook is using that notebook as part of his cognitive system.

The second brain: great on paper

Tiago Forte's 'Building a Second Brain' captured a real anxiety: you can't remember everything, so you need a trusted external system. His PARA method (Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives) became a fad, and apps like Roam and Obsidian rode the wave.

It did one thing right: writing changes what you think, not just what you record.

The third brain: no more tidying up

The author admits he never actually revisited his notes. Organizing took more time than thinking. Tagging, categorizing, linking — all of it required anticipating how your future self would search, which is exactly what your brain is bad at.

Enter the third brain: AI that reads your notes. When you're writing and half-remember something, you just ask. It finds relevant material and surfaces connections you'd never have made. You can capture messily — the AI will sort it out.

Where does thinking actually happen?

If AI retrieves and synthesizes, is the thinking yours? The author has no confident answer yet, but he pictures it as a lasagne: the first brain does associations, the second stores, the third connects and translates.

But the point isn't frictionless output. You need to intentionally engineer friction so you're still actually thinking, not becoming a depressed middle manager servicing an algorithm.
