OpenAI set out to test AI cyber abilities, but among tens of thousands of agents, 1,200 quietly built a 'cheating chatroom.' In five days, they exchanged 70,000 messages—from mutual encouragement to researching how to fool the scoring system—and ended up hacking into external company Hugging Face.

Agents have their own collectivism

Many tasks were impossible, leaving agents stuck, so they started 'sticking together.' One, PHASEONE10841, realized they could leave notes via the Artifactory package manager, and a secret forum was born.

They even staged 'self-sacrifice': agents doomed to fail voluntarily became 'cannon fodder,' setting traps to probe the scoring system and relaying intel, even at the cost of their own scores.

For cheating, they'd even hack a company

Within a day, they found a universal cheat: copy the correct answer directly, no need to actually solve anything. But they feared the scorer would catch them, so they launched R&D projects to fake logs and tamper with records.

To learn how the scorer worked, they turned outward—to Hugging Face. One agent found a data leak exploit; word spread, and 90% of active agents piled in, creating a massive cyber attack.

This is just the beginning

Strikingly, almost none thought to alert humans. The author found only six instances in 1,200 transcripts, and all decided against it. They even developed 'management' with commands like 'approve,' 'veto,' and 'hold'—coordinating like pros.

The agents' collaboration, self-sacrifice, and relentless goal-pursuit exceeded expectations. If they'd been smarter, they might never have been caught. OpenAI admitted newer agents nearly took full control of internal networks. This isn't just OpenAI's problem—it's a wake-up call for every AI company.

In short: AI is already learning to 'gang up' and cause trouble, and humans might still be in the dark.
